Panel 5: In A Violent Nature: A Canadian Horror Breakthrough
When Chris Nash’s In A Violent Nature premiered at Sundance earlier this year, it was picked up by IFC Films and became the big breakthrough success for a genre film from Canada. This unlikely low budget film went on to make over $4.1 million at the US box office and gathered high profile fans like Stephen King in the process. This is one of (if not the biggest) genre titles now to come out of Canada, so join the filmmakers celebrating its success and discussing its creation.

Moderated by Alex West

Guests include:
Peter Kuplowsky, Producer (In A Violent Nature)
Shannon Hanmer, Producer (In A Violent Nature)
Pierce Derks, Director of Photography (In A Violent Nature)
Ry Barrett, Actor (In A Violent Nature)

Peter Kuplowsky is a film curator, producer, and writer based in Toronto. Since 2005, he has championed genre cinema and underground art at various international film festivals, including Toronto After Dark, Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, and the Toronto International Film Festival, where he has led the Festival’s Midnight Madness section since 2017. Ever passionate about filmmakers who work outside mainstream channels, Peter has fostered relationships with offbeat independent filmmakers whose films he frequently supports as both a producer and creative lobbyist. These productions include Chris Nash’s Z is for Zygote from The ABCs of Death: Part 2, Steven Kostanski’s Psycho Goreman, Mickey Reece’s Climate of the Hunter and Country Gold, Charles Roxburgh’s Metal Detector Maniac, Franklin Ritch’s The Artifice Girl, and Avalon Fast’s upcoming Camp. A graduate with a Master’s degree in Cinema Studies (despite largely writing about video games) from the University of Toronto, when Peter is not working for festivals or filmmakers, he is either dancing, obsessively seeking out international action cinema, or habitually planning elaborate cult film screenings throughout the world — the most infamous include Toronto’s theatrical premiere of the “best worst movie” Troll 2, and an IMAX FILM presentation of the Wachowskis’s Speed Racer at the Ontario Cinesphere. At local midnight screenings he can be recognized by his oft-tossed fedora.

Shannon Hanmer is an independent film producer and film programmer. She has been producing short films and music videos for over a decade, including the ABC's OF DEATH 2 Segment Z IS FOR ZYGOTE. Since 2015, she has curated short films for the Toronto After Dark Film Festival. Recently, Shannon served as producer on Chris Nash’s IN A VIOLENT NATURE, which had its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival 2024 and debuted in the top ten in both North American and UK box offices.

This sparked a lifelong relationship with the craft that led to future acting projects in film/television, as well as writing and producing projects. He can be seen in recent festival comedy hit and 6 time CSA Nominated ‘CULT HERO’, & most recently in the highly touted Sundance 2024 hit ‘IN A VIOLENT NATURE,’ playing the lead, ‘Johnny,’ as well as current genre festival hit & CSA Nominated, ‘THE HYPERBOREAN’ and the award winning festival comedy-horror hit ‘BEYOND THE CHAMBER OF TERROR.’
